Printable Valentine’s Day Gift Tags

Free printable Valentines Day gift tags

It’s an exciting “first” today, guys: I made you some free printable gift tags to use for Valentine’s Day, or really any day you’ll be giving a gift to someone you XO or <3.  We’re keeping them really simple and minimal, which is a lot of why they can be used for other occasions, and even more simple is that all you need to do is print and cut them out.  Our mantra yet again applies: simple is best!

Another cool announcement is that this project was made possible through a new partnership with Canon that I can’t fully describe how terribly excited I am about it.  !!!  This is the first of a series of projects I’ll be sharing using printing capabilities, which means more printable freebies and personalized projects that will take us to new places in DIY territory.  In short, it’s going to be fun :).

painted heartsI hand-painted the designs for these tags with just a small brush and black acrylic paint to achieve that handmade, brush stroke texture.  Fun fact: even though I practiced the heart many times, I ended up using the first one I painted.  Same with the XO, though I only did that once because I loved the way it turn out on the first try.  This never happens, so I had to mention it.

I scanned my doodles with the PIXMA MG7720 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer and created the gift tag template in Photoshop.  I printed it out on card stock and it looked like this!

Canon-MG7720-PrinterSeeing my tags get printed out was a joy for DIY unlike any I’ve experienced.  Knowing there’s a possibility of you printing and using these makes me feel even more connected to you, even if it’s just through your printer, ha!  This is already such a cool feeling.

After cutting them out and punching holes where the black dots are, I strung on some black hemp cord onto each tag.

If not for packaged gifts, these tags would work for tying around treat bags, or even a wrapped bouquet of flowers.

Bonus tip: I printed mine on this cardstock with a faux wood design on the back.  It adds on another interesting design element that I highly encourage you to experiment with.  Double sided cardstock could also look really cool as well.

Friday Finds

Friday!!  What a strange week this was for me.  I was bit by the exhaustion bug and can’t figure out why because nothing much out of the ordinary happened.  This whole week I felt so tired regardless of the good amount of sleep I was getting.  Does that ever happen to you?  When it feels like you can’t get enough sleep?  Do I just love sleep too much?

Notable happenings this week: ate the best pasta I’ve ever had and saw a surprise show with Bill Burr!  You might’ve seen that on my Snapchat ;).  The night was meant to be our Valentine’s Day celebration, which was far enough in advance to not even be related to V-day, and that’s totally fine.  Our V-day tradition is to celebrate early to avoid the crowds, and we took that to the furthest advancement yet this year.  Loved it (thanks, O <3)

Enjoy this week’s links, and happy weekend!

02/04 Inspiring Spaces

Minimal Bedrooms (Again)

We’re still in the stage of decluttering the bedroom, the biggest task being putting the furniture up on Craigslist which I don’t at all consider the most fun thing in the world, but it’s going to feel sooo amazing if we can get to a clean slate before redoing the space to be calm, clean, and relaxing like these spaces.

I know, I already did a post on minimal bedrooms but I’m just not over them and find myself browsing this category the most during my Pinterest binges.  For me, these bedrooms make up the ideal scenery for rest and relaxation.

I wouldn’t go this extreme, but this one struck me the most.  Makes me want to inhale deep and exhale with an audible sigh.  You, too?

DIY Geometric Candle Holders

DIY-Geometric Candle Holders

Oh man, when’s the last time I did a candle holder DIY…  I don’t think I did a single one last year, which is interesting because they were pretty regular in 2014.  Actually that probably makes sense because I was perhaps burned out (see that?) from doing them.

Well, I still love candles, think they’re probably my favorite thing for the home and everywhere, and they’re really simple to get creative with for a DIY.  This months prompt for the Michaels Makers challenge is what I think we’d all agree is at the heart of DIY: personalization and putting our own spin on things.  Especially when it comes to decor, this can be the reason for why we do any of this at all, so for me, with a new bookcase in the corner that needed updated decor to match how my style has evolved since 2014, I’m starting with these easy geometric wood candle holders.

Materials:
-geometric wood objects (from Michaels)
drill
3/4″ spade bit
painters tape
-aluminum foil
-spray paint (I used black, white, and copper)

Geometric woodThese geometric wood objects came with predrilled holes that aren’t big enough for candles (not at all sure what they were intended for) so I just flipped them over to the other side and drilled my own holes.  Personalization win!

drillI used a 3/4″ spade bit to drill the hole about a half inch deep, which fits a tapered candle perfectly.

tapeNext, I applied the edge of painters tape around the half way point of each candle holder, then covered the rest with aluminum foil.  I spray painted each candle holder in two light coats with one minute of drying in between before removing all the tape and foil.

It’s possible that copper could be my gold this year.  I mentioned before wanting to play around with that more, and so far so good!

DIY Wood Desk Organizers

DIY Wood Desk Organizers- Homey Oh MyAs I flipped through my planner from last year, I saw why it’s cool to keep your planner from last year.  Bigger reasons include seeing where you were then, what you were up to, how far you’ve come, all that good self-growth stuff and so on.  The reason I’m shining light on today however, which I consider delicious surprise nuggets, is rediscovering abandoned ideas.

Among the scribbles in January 2015 was a note to repurpose boxes for organizing, with “wood?” written in parentheses.  Instead I had went with this contact paper idea which I still love and use, but now I’m curious about why I didn’t figure out that “wood” idea and want to do something about that.  Plus, I’ve only been talking about my workspace makeover forever and could use some organizers for the desk drawers, so this is working out pretty nice for me!

Materials:
Wood boxes (the larger one is also from Michaels)
-screwdriver
foam brushes
-paint (I used white, gray, and charcoal)
paint pen
wallpaper optional
wood boxI didn’t end up using that smaller square box, but for the others I removed the hardware with a screwdriver.  This leaves behind holes, which I actually didn’t mind, but I wanted to show that you could fill them in with wood filler.  I used a toothpick to dab it into the holes, then scraped the side of the toothpick across the top to level it off.  This stuff is purple but dries white, which was cool when I first thought I’d be painting the edges but then decided not to.  The white dots do show, but again, I don’t mind!

paintI painted the bottom of each box a different color.  For this white one, I tried three different patterns, painting over the last layer in multiple coats in between attempts, and it was all failing, so I covered it up with wallpaper.

wallpaper

I measured the inside of the box and cut those dimensions out of this grid wallpaper, then stuck it onto the bottom of the box.  Problem covered solved  Viva la grid!

paintingFor the gray box, I drew on this sprinkle/confetti design with a paint pen, which isn’t very good at creating sharp corners, so I used a detail brush with white paint to draw those in.

Funny after all that painting and drying time, I ended up liking the grid wallpaper the most- the simpler ideas tend to win my vote!  It has me thinking about other things I’d want to stick that paper on.  Any ideas for that??

Heart-Shaped Brunch

heart-shaped-breakfastSomething a little different today for the blog, getting a little nostalgic, and it’s a V-Day themed idea!  I recalled a childhood memory of my mom using those pancake/egg rings in multiple shapes to cook with.  I’m sure I realized it then, and as I think about it now, it’s a very cute thing to do and makes basic meals suddenly really fun and special without having to become a master chef.  It’s the little things, as always.  So if it’s your own kids, family, him, or her you’re trying to smother with love this Valentine’s Day, try incorporating these easy DIY techniques for turning your favorite brunch items into heart shapes.

Heart-Shaped Eggs

Story time.  Every Thursday, I go to the same farmer’s market to get 18 farm fresh eggs because they changed my life.  That orange yolk is so rich and bomb.  Nothing else I’ve tried is as good, and ever since I discovered them almost two years ago I’ve been eating them pretty much every day for breakfast.  I’m that type of person who’s totally cool with eating the same thing every day if it’s this good, so when we’re talking about making a favorite brunch, these eggs are mandatory for us.

heart-shaped-egg

I used a heart-shaped cookie cutter sprayed with cooking oil along the inner edge and placed it on an oiled pan at medium heat.  I cracked the egg directly into the mold and used a spoon to move and hold the yolk in the center.  After the egg cooks a little, the yolk will stay.  Any egg white that seeps through the bottom of the mold can just be cut off later.  Once cooked, I removed the mold with tongs and then scooped the egg onto a plate.

Salt and peppered with a side of thick-cut bacon and a cup of coffee = our perfect breakfast right there, we can stop now, but ok there’s a couple more ideas.

Heart-Shaped Fruit

Some friends for those pancakes.

Powdered Sugar Heart

Heart-shaped pancakes can for sure be made using the same tools we used for the eggs, but after seeing the heart detail for this cocktail, I thought it was too cute not to try something similar.paper heartFold a piece of card stock in half and draw half a heart.  Cut along the line to create this heart cut-out.

powdered sugar

Center the heart on top of the pancake and tap powdered sugar over it using a strainer.

Remove the paper very careful upwards so that the heart doesn’t get smudged.

Do this right before serving because the heat from the pancake will melt the sugar (lesson learned).
