Framed Milestones

framed milestones

Of all the things that can personalize the home, I consider art the most personality-packed decor item, especially if you created it yourself or if it holds meaning to you.  I still think there’s a ton of personality in choosing art that you simply love to look at even if you don’t really know why, but the ones that tell a story are always going to make you feel most at home.

As I planned out my workspace redesign (which you’re right now seeing an early peek at!), I loved the idea of framing milestone moments and accomplished goals as visual reminders to keep working hard.  Framebridge partnered with me on this project to turn my milestones into inspirational art, and further continued my belief that a frame can turn anything into art.  They do affordable custom framing that’s as easy as uploading your photos to their site or sending your art rolled up in a mail tube that they first send to you- I LOVED the convenience of this service and know it’s something I’ll continue using in the future.

So what’s the story behind each framed piece?

gloves

I shared this photo of my boxing gloves on Instagram a while back, talking about how I love boxing and more importantly, how I found my drive to stay dedicated to fitness.  As someone who prior to last fall didn’t exercise regularly or at all for more than 3 years, I thought it was impossible for me to become enthusiastic about working out.  Then, somehow I got my butt out the door to try a bunch of different classes and ended up really loving a lot of different workouts, boxing being my favorite.  Since then I’ve consistently been working out in the mornings 5 days a week (apologies to Snapchat followers who are sick of me Snapchatting about that).  This is absolutely one of my proudest accomplishments.  Ever.

Aside from the addiction to getting physically stronger, the mental training has had the most positive impact on every part of my life.  The lessons I’m repeatedly taught is that I’m always more capable than I think I am, that the only way to progress is to push perceived boundaries, and that positivity can never be overrated.  These gloves represent all of that to me, I love looking at them for that, and yes, they make me feel like a badass.

beach

I shot this photo with my phone at the beach during a short trip with my guy this past NYE.  It was a very treat yo’self type of deal: we got a nice hotel room, ate what was probably the best meal we’ve ever had, got full body massages, ordered room service for breakfast, basically things that we never do.  Maybe it’s my work-a-holic personality, but I’ve always felt guilty about taking breaks (I’m that kid who hated missing school for any reason because I didn’t want to fall behind.)  I rarely indulge in celebrating accomplishments, and we both realized that we’ve fallen into this trap of thinking that we’ll fully let ourselves enjoy life once we retire.

I felt proud of ourselves for taking this trip, and we also ended up reflecting on some goals we want to achieve this year, traveling more definitely being near the top of the list.  This photo reminds me that retirement is not the only time to do what we want to do, that working hard and enjoying life can occur at the same time, and that we have more fun trips to plan this year.

bulb

The biggest moment of my life so far was quitting my job last fall to do this blog full time.  I sit here a lot, typing out a blog post, sometimes still feeling like an intruder, and painfully grateful that I get to do what I love.  The first time I remember feeling confident about my identity as a creative was when I got this print titled “Idea Phases” with the following description:

“Here’s to the makers, the night owls, the perfectionists who burn midnight oil in bulk, determined to nurture an idea into its strongest final form.”

I like to think that I approach everything in this manner, that I worked very hard for everything that I have now, and that all of this isn’t a mistake.  What I see in this print is how the process, as tiresome and brutal as it can be, is worth it to see an idea come alive and inspire others.  It makes me very proud of what I do.

DIY Mini Plant Stands

Mini Plant Stands DIY-2I have zero problems finding plants I like or convincing myself to bring too many home, but the struggle lies in finding stylish and affordable planters to put them in.  Simple ceramics are fairly easy to source, but for something unique or more decorative, it gets challenging.

This is why my plants will first sit around in their original plastic pots for a long time without getting planted in a forever home.  Sometimes it goes on so long that I’ll resort to planting them in terra cotta pots, which there’s nothing wrong with those and I’m a fan of the low price tag, but I figured there’s an opportunity here to come up with an easy way to make them more modern.

These plant stands, though simple to make, are on the longer side of time commitment due to drying times (I noted them in the instructions), but the fuss is still very low!  Definitely worth it for how much they elevate (HEH) your basic terra cotta pots through minimal and modern design.

Materials:
-1/4″ square basswood dowels
saw
mitre box
E6000
-3.5″ terra cotta pots
-paint (I used black and white)
foam brushes

saw

I marked measurements on the wood with pencil and cut two dowels at a time, using a mitre box to help keep the cutting straight while holding the dowels against the box with my left hand.

wood piecesWood piece measurements from left to right:
4 x 3.25″ (for the squares)
4 x 3.75″ (for the squares)
4 x 5″ (for the pillars)

For the shorter stand, the 4 pillars were cut to 3.5″ each.

squareAs previously mentioned, the pieces that make up the squares are the 3.25″ and 3.75″ pieces.  Each square is comprised of two of each, so in the photo above the 3.25″ pieces are on the top and bottom and the 3.75″ pieces are on the left and right.  I made two of these and used E6000 to attach them at the corners.  It’s better to dot on too much glue and wipe off the excess after attaching than to apply too little.

*Note- this glue takes time to set and will require either clamping or patiently holding/pushing the corners by hand until it dries a bit.  Wait until completely dry before moving on (I’d estimate about an hour… I know, not ideal, but while you wait you can build a second one, paint the terra cotta pots, go run an errand, work on another project, read, watch TV, eat, great excuse to go do something fun.)

glue

Next I glued on the pillar pieces.  I only did two at a time because they won’t hold their weight until dry, so having them rest against the table is necessary.  I waited until it completely dried before gluing on the other two (another hour, I know).

Lastly, I glued on the second square piece on top of the pillars.  Again, I waited until it completely dried before moving on (yes).

DIY Mini Wood Plant Stand

I used all the drying times to paint the terra cotta pots, among other fun things, so once all the glue dried I was ready to plop the plant in.

Ok, so how sturdy are these?  Glue is not ideal for longevity, I agree, but as long as the plant/pot weight is kept small and the stands are handled very gently, it should hold pretty well.  All my experiences with E6000 have been excellent and I’ve really come to trust the hold.

If you still don’t feel good about it, you can use a nail gun to attach the corners together.  This was actually my initial plan, but the only nail gun I could find for 23G pin nails (very small and basically invisible) required an air pump attachment, which I don’t have realistic access to.  Also, the room for error is super small given the thinness of the dowels, so glue was overall much simpler and really, sufficient for my needs.

DIY Air Plant Holders

Alternative: These stands will be able to support the weight of air plants forever, absolutely.

I ultimately prefer the stands with the potted ivy, but I so appreciate having the option to switch it up if I feel like it.  What do you think?  Air plants or potted plants?

I knew this week would go by fast, but man… that was fast.  I spent the week successfully fighting off being on the verge of getting sick, yes!  That verge always feels like I’m hanging off a cliff and mustering all the grip strength I have to get back up over the edge, grip strength being increased mostly by plenty of sleep.  Incredibly pleased to report that my initial cold symptoms are wearing off.  Excellent timing for the weekend.

Made good progress on making changes to my workspace, which the photo above is a tiny experimental snippet of that I shared on Instagram, and I’ll finally be sharing all of that soon.  This weekend will definitely be spent on finishing it off.

Have a great weekend, and enjoy this week’s links!

Shop: Copper for the Home

Copper for the home

One thing I’ve learned from my love of metallics is to not overdo it.  There once was a time where if I had to pick a color option for anything, I’d always pick gold, but then when every single thing is gold it’s oddly not so special anymore.  You know what I mean, right?

With copper being that thing I’m really into right now, I’m thinking about ways to bring it home in small touches, just little doses of shine that feel unique plus aren’t a huge commitment if suddenly your metallics preferences change.  Really though, all metallics are welcome.

1. Hanging planter– Gorgeous and very affordable.
2. Tape dispenser– If I didn’t already have one I loved, and if this one went on major discount (HA), I’d want this one.
3. Candle holder– Recently got this in black but spent a long time deciding between that and copper. I think I made the right choice, but I still love the copper.
4. Catch-all– For your trinkets or for your air plant to sit in.
5. Coasters– Maybe my favorite coasters ever. That soft hammered detail is a winner.
6. Wire bowl– What I’d love for my fruit bowl to look like.
7. French press– Prettiest one I’ve ever seen.
8. Lamp– An option I’ve been contemplating for the bedroom. We’ll see!
9. Canisters– I dream of a kitchen with copper details. Pots, pans, everything. Oh yea, but not everything because we don’t want to overdo it, right, I remember.
10. Cups– For drinking, pencil holding, or flower arranging.
11. Flatware– I’m currently coveting a matte black set, but these copper ones would be so pretty especially for fall.

Real Talk: This Week Wasn’t So Bad

bowl of flowersHey guys.  How’s it going?  I felt like doing a really casual post to chat and check in on myself a little, so I am!  No links or “content,” just babbling.

Anywho, I think I’m in a story telling mood because I had one of those weeks where I was feeling like it was the worst week ever but really it wasn’t at all, not even close, but you know how that goes when you’re in the heat of things and need a little help getting a dose of perspective.

What am I talking about?  I’m talking about how I dropped my phone in the toilet HAHA.  I swear I can’t go a year without breaking or losing my phone.  I did everything I was supposed to: turned it off, let it dry in front of a fan for almost two days, and everything works fine except the phone won’t connect to the cellular network.  Why yes, that is the most important part.

After spending an entire day driving back and forth between Verizon and Apple (it was a total of five times with the Genius Bar having me wait a few hours to make appointments geez.  Does the whole “fool me twice shame on me” thing apply to this because it really feels like my fault), each party blaming the other for the issue and dealing with some rude people, I was still without a fully functioning phone at the end of the day.  What made this worse is a story that sounds totally unrelated but it is related.

Earlier this week at one of my regular classes at the gym, the trainer made us do a bajillion situps on the hard floor without a mat.  I thought I got through it pretty well, but when I got home I noticed my tailbone was bleeding.  It was chafed to the BONE.  Is this TMI??  HAHA too late!  From then on, I’ve been in pain.  Anytime I sit or move, it hurts, so it’s been tough trying to focus and get work done.  Definitely an off week.

So, I’m running back and forth trying to get someone to fix my phone, my tailbone is on fire, and I can’t help but be extra irritable.  I was frustrated that I wasn’t getting any blog work done, that I let my stupid phone take up an entire day, and that I couldn’t just sit and relax without any pain.  When I got home from my final unsuccessful trip to Apple that day, I let out a good cry while I told my guy the whole story (embarrassing) and took a moment afterwards to think the following thoughts:

I’m grateful for my body and that I’m healthy enough to workout in ways that I really enjoy, even if that means parts of me might get chafed sometimes.  I’m also super grateful that I have the freedom to take a day to handle personal matters and errands, a result of getting to work a job I love.  Finally, it’s just a phone.  Things that can be replaced by buying a new one are the lowest problems to have.  It’s also no secret I can afford to spend less time on my phone, so suck it up girl, you can wait.

As part of my efforts to continually return to a heart of gratitude, especially in the stupidest of moments, I’m feeling waayyy better and totally didn’t cry what are you talking about.

Extremely ready for a really exciting weekend ahead that I’ve been looking forward to for a while.  Some friends have this Monday off for President’s Day so we planned a long weekend trip to stay in a barn in the middle of nowhere.  Yes!  There will be animals, and there will be nearby wineries so we’ll be going on a tasting tour.  For sure will be Snapchatting (@homeyohmy) if I have a new phone by then, and if not, I’ll be Snapchatting when there’s wifi for me to connect to haha.

Thanks for reading my weird recap of the week.  Happy weekend, Happy Valentine’s Day (I love you guys), and see you here next week <3.
